Sydney Schoellhorn

Congratulations to Sydney!

Sydney is the finalist for a USDA NIFA pre-doctoral fellowship award for $180,000 which funds Sydney's work for 3 years to focus on agriculture related research. Specifically, she is investigating a fungal endophyte of corn that appears to protect corn from other fungal pathogens that secrete mycotoxins. The idea is that the endophyte could be developed as a biocontrol agent provided that it does not secrete harmful chemicals itself. The project has huge implications for food safety and preventing food spoilage. As far as we know from the awards database, this is the first time a graduate student at UNT has received this award.

Syd Schoellhorn (she/they) is a fourth year PhD Candidate in Bioanalytical Chemistry within BDI. They received a B.S. in Chemistry in 2019 and a M.S. in Advanced Data Analytics in 2021 from UNT. Syd joined the Skellam research group to work on fungal natural products research applications for the agricultural industry. Outside of the lab, she is involved in BDI and the Chemistry Department and serves as the inaugural Vice President of the Chemistry Graduate Student Organization.
